How to write your IELTS essay?

Planning your IELTS Writing Task 2 essay is crucial for achieving a Band 7+ score. It ensures your ideas are clear, organized, and relevant. Here’s a structured method for planning your essay, based on guidance from official sources like IDP IELTS, British Council, and IELTS Advantage:

 1. Understand the question (1–2 min)

  • Identify the question type:
    • Opinion
    • Discussion
    • Problem/Solution
    • Advantages/Disadvantages
    • Two-part question
  • Underline keywords in the task
  • Ask yourself: What am I being asked to do?

 2. Decide your position (1 min)

  • Do you agree or disagree?
  • What is your viewpoint?
  • This will guide your thesis statement

3. Brainstorm ideas (3 min)

  • Note 2–3 key points that support your position
  • Avoid vague or general ideas. Think of real examples or reasons

Example:
Topic: “Some people think school children should learn how to grow food. To what extent do you agree?”
Point 1: Builds responsibility and awareness of nature
Point 2: Encourages healthy eating and sustainability

 4. Organize into paragraphs (2–3 min)

Essay structure:

Paragraph What to Include
Introduction Paraphrase the question + Thesis Statement
Body Paragraph 1 Main Idea 1 + Explanation + Example
Body Paragraph 2 Main Idea 2 + Explanation + Example
Conclusion Summarize + Restate position

5. Plan transitions

Use linking phrases to ensure logical flow:

  • Firstly, In addition, Moreover, However, As a result, In conclusion

Pro tips for effective planning

  • Use short notes or bullet points — don’t write full sentences
  • Stick to 2 body paragraphs unless you’re very confident
  • Avoid memorized templates — use flexible structures
  • Include a real-life or hypothetical example in each paragraph
